“THE TIME HAS COME … FOR US TO MOVE ON.” BBM To Shutdown On The 31st Of May

There was a time when Blackberry Messenger was the trending platform and if you did not have a BBM Pin you would be seen as either a low-class citizen, old school individual and somewhat irrelevant. However the world have fast moved passed the “Can I have your pin” phase as people have moved on to different messaging platforms, more especially WhatsApp. This migration has greatly put a dent on the amount of users on the BBM platform, so much that Emtek (the company that has taken over running the BBM app since 2016) has announced that it will end support for the messaging app on May 31st.

Emtek cited the fleeting users over the past years despite efforts to revitalize the app with features like Uber hailing and video calling.

According to Emtek:

“We are proud of what we have built to date … The technology industry however, is very fluid, and in spite of our substantial efforts, users have moved on to other platforms, while new users proved difficult to sign on,” the company wrote in a blog. “Though we are sad to say goodbye, the time has come to sunset the BBM consumer service, and for us to move on.”

But if, like most people, you’ve already moved on, then let us all remember a moment in time when it was considered cool to tell people to find you on an app using a convoluted mixture of numbers and letters as a way to add friends.
